On Thursday, 3rd March 2011 we re-enacted the Ancient Olympics, as part of our Classical Studies class. To do this though, we not only had to have the ancient Greek strength and will power, but also the ancient Greek state of mind. We did this by giving ourselves Greek names and attitudes.
For our mini Olympics, we first took part in a sprint. The sprints consisted of us running with weights to compensate for the armour the Greeks had to wear. It started out with the boys running first, and when Ms. Finnegan shouted "Aptae!", they ran. The winner of the boy’s race was Hercules (Peader Charles). When it was the girls turn to run, Venus (Emma O’Brien) won. The two winners were given victory arrows to wear for the rest of the day.
After our sprints we took part in a competition to see who could throw the javelin the farthest. The winners were Hermes (Aaron Sheridan) and Venus (Emma O’Brien). Next we took part in another race with everyone in the class taking part – boys and girls. Our winner was... dun dun dun! ... Hercules (Peader Charles)
Finally, we had an ancient gladiator battle. It was very tense but it was exciting and enjoyable for everyone. The wrestling was probably the best part of the day. The winners were Dido (Amy Bennett) and Hermes (Aaron Sheridan).
After our energetic trip back in time, we were all exhausted! But of course we all agreed it was definitely worth it. (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of photo. ))
