 Managing Information and Thinking.

Since September 2014, Ms. O'Kelly, our school librarian, has been teaching the TY students a module called Information Literacy. The objective of teaching this skill to students is to ensure that students understand:

  • the many different sources of information that can be used when they are researching
  • keeping track of their information sources
  • how to discriminate between authoritative, trustworthy information and information that is not
  • how to apply search strategies in databases and search engines
  • how to include citations, references and a bibliography in their academic work

Students are taught the importance of the lifecycle of research project based on the poster that is available from www.askaboutireland.ie.  Another critical aspect of this module is to understand what is plagiarism and the consequences of plagiarism both in their academic life and in their future careers. Finally TY students go on a trip to a local public Library with the aim of finding resources that they've sourced in the online catalogue on the actual Library shelves.

TY students are also encouraged to study an on-line course MOOC) of their choice  and our 5th and 6th Years are registered for on-line  Project Maths tutorials as part of their Project Maths course.

Again, since September 2014, the First Year English students are embarking on the new Junior Cycle course which involves, amongst other skills, managing their own digital portfolio of work. Examples of work completed to date include "The Stratford Times" edited by Jakob Miller, Phelim McDevitt, Jack McAvinue and Greg Brenner. And  we are reviewing our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy by examining the benefits and challenges of students using their own devices for learning over the last 6 months.

All of this is within the context of internet safety and http://www.stratfordcollege.ie/news/post/safer-internet-day-10th-february-2015 has many resources and recent publications that we need to bear in mind.
