On the 28th of February the Sixth and Fifth year Classics and Drama, Film & Theatre studies students flew to Rome bright and early. We were flown there by past pupil Greg, First Officer. This added to the excitement of the trip. We visited the Pantheon where we got to see the sun through the oculus and the sheer scale of the building. This was the first time for many of the students seeing the building. We visited the Capitoline museum where we saw many interesting artifacts most notably the statue of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus on the first day.

The second day we prepared for a day at Ostia Antica and its beach. At Ostia the Drama, Film and Theatre studies students preformed an original piece in front of an ancient roman theatre. We all enjoyed getting to explore the city of Ostia and it really helped us to picture what it would have been like as an ancient Roman and was the highlight visit for many of the students. Afterwards for the first time on a Rome trip, we went to the beach where we were given free time to try Italian cuisine. Before Dinner we went to the Circus Maximous where we all managed to run at least one lap of it, with Conall completing five laps. He could have completed the original 7 but we had to get to our next stop. We went to dinner and then got ice-cream by the Trevi fountain.

On the second day we all rushed to the Vatican where we met our guides Luka and Richard. We witnessed some of the most influential art of the renaissance including the Sistine chapel. We spent time learning about The School of Athens which ties into our philosophy module in Classics. We then visited St Peters Basilica which was “beautiful” according to the students. After free time we visited the Ara Pacis of Augustus. We then returned to the hotel to get ready for the last night where we all dressed up for the fancy dinner.

The last day was packed. We made our way from the hotel to the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) and onto an amazing tour of the palatine hill. The final group of students gave their presentation on the temple of the Vesta in front of it in the Roman Forum during blue skies and the sun shining. We made our way to the Garden of Livia which was breathtaking. We travelled back to the airport where we were flown back home by Greg.

Thank you to Ms. Donohoe, Ms. Caspi, Ms Finnegan and Ms. Mahon for organising and supervising the trip.
