On Thursday evening, 4th November, a group of students, parents and teaching staff went to the Web Summit for Schools in the RDS. Stratford College was one of the lucky schools to have applied for tickets - only the first 30 schools to apply got tickets!
On the 4th of November I was approached to attend the 2014 Web Summit for Schools. At first I had no idea to what it was about, but it was summed up in a few words by our principal "Techy, Geeky Stuff". I was intrigued and after coming home to see it was on the news I was pleasantly surprised.
Arriving at the Web Summit we were given the brief synopsis of it being the place of nearly 20,000 people over the past few days for small business start ups and new technologies. After waltzing around what looked to be the barren RDS we came to magnificent stage for the grand debut for Schools.
Schools from around Ireland came to attend and filled the room quite nicely. We were greeted with a fantastical lighting display and technological pomp as the obnoxiously American speaker came out to greet us warmly. We were brought through an array of brilliant speeches. Most notably were the three girls my age who had won the Google Science Fair 2014 for their way of using natural bacteria to increase crop output. It was brilliant to see someone our age to do something so brilliant, also to see women take the stage in headlining these advancements.
On our way home I was talking to Rory and we both had the same though in our head "I really wish I had heard this earlier, might have had a better effect". But I feel we are at the perfect time to take in this knowledge. It is now to realise that we all have the potential for greater things.

On Tuesday evening, 4th November, a number of Third, Fourth and Fifth year students attended the Web Summit for Secondary Schools for an evening of inspiring talks from some of the world's leading entrepreneurs, engineers, executives, investors and media. I wasn't sure what I was expecting before I got there. I was told that we were going to sit for a group of numerous speakers to talk to us about a variety of things around technology. I was even more excited when I entered and noticed how enormous it was and saw a selection of all different schools there with us.
Web Summit was one of the most exciting events I've ever been to. I got to hear about how a child as young as eight created her own website and how three teenage girls might make a big change in the future that will help us create more food for the demanding growing population. Or how robots really are all around us, they're just not what we actually imagine them to be because humans tend to respond to things with human features! All these things I wasn't aware of, the explanations and the endless inspiring talks were what made the whole experience enjoyable.
It definitely changed my views on the world today and how crucial it is that our generation understands that we're up next on making the big changes and helping the world as it grows and develops. I'll definitely be hoping to attend the Web Summit next year, and the next after that! It's a great opportunity that not everyone is fortunate to get. I definitely walked out of there with a more open mind to the world and how much it is evolving around us. Thank you for the experience and opportunity.
