NEWS / 15 January 2020

TY Classics students were tasked with writing a myth for the primary school and to present them to Stratford National School pupils on 4th December. They were given three weeks to do this project. Read how some of the groups responded to the design brief.

Ahmad, Dragos and Hugh: We wanted to make a short story for the primary school students but to also include a moral in the story. As a group we came up with a story based on the simple concept of the sun earth and the moon. The moral of our story was to teach the primary students to love each other and accept that everybody has something beautiful and unique about themselves. We had three weeks to work on our myth, so we got straight to work as a group. When designing our images, we decided to make them simple but colourful so that they would appeal to the primary school. Our writing was big and clear to make it easier for the primary students to read. We presented our myth to the Primary School on Wednesday the 4th of December. Presenting our work to the younger students of the Primary school was very enjoyable and definitely one the best parts of Transition Year.

Nathan: "The Golden Chalice" The golden chalice is a myth written for children about a thief called Dimos who lives in the town of Azmarin. He goes around every night stealing peoples valuables and when people find out that it is Dimos they come up with a plan to stop him. An old lady has a magical golden chalice that if you touch it you turn to dust unless you say a specific prayer before. The plan was to put it on a front window which would make Dimos want to steal it and when he touched it he would turn to dust. The moral/ message of the story is to not steal or there will be consequences.

Jason: the purpose of the project was to write and illustrate a children's book/ myth with a moral code and the class split up into either groups or solos. We would later go to the national primary school and read our stories to them. We set up their hall and placed blankets and pillows for them to sit on.

The experience of engaging an audience of inspired children was really pleasing as we read our stories in different sections in the room and switched audience every 10 minutes. The children were really delighted and asked many questions about our experiences and the story.

This story is about five spirits who work together as a team and to become something beautiful.

They fight through problems and finally live together happily ever after.

I chose to write about this story as I thought it was very children friendly and colourful which engages the children and it was very fun to work on.

Robyn: The first family is about how the galaxy, stars, sun and moon made the first family, it’s a story full of sacrifice and friendship.

We were given the assignment to make a classical style myth, we had the chose to do it in teams or individually I chose to do it individually. We had 2 months to fully come up, write and put the book together.

It was a challenging assignment, but it was very enjoyable to participate in. We then presented to the class and then the primary school on the 4th of December.

Josh, Eli and Sid: "Procrastinating Paul": our story is about a dog named Paul. He always procrastinates when doing anything. During the development of the story, he learns how to not procrastinate and work diligently due to the help of his friend Walter. The moral of the story is that you should do your homework and not procrastinate. There is also a hidden meaning which is to help your friends when they are struggling with life.

We came up with this idea because our group also procrastinated from time-to-time. Josh designed the images, Sid wrote the story and finally, Eli was the proofreader and printed the Myth.

The feeling of reading in front of the National Junior School made us feel happy as they listened quietly and patiently asked us questions about the story. We left knowing that they understood the moral and learned something new.

Isobel, Grace and Olivia: "The Brightest Sun" For our Classics class this year, we wrote a myth aimed towards the primary school children in the national school. We wrote a short myth all about the creation of the sun and the moon. To keep our audience captivated our story follows two competitive stars, Luna and Solis, desperate to save the cold, miserable earth! A competition is set out by the head planet and the plot teaches the readers all about playing fair.
