NEWS / 4 February 2018

Congratulations to all the TY students and some of the 5th Years who along with Ms. Kenny and Ms. Gordon, voted on plenary and committee debates in the Chamber of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday, 1st February. The TYs had submitted a video in November which was deemed one of the Irish winners in the Euroscola competition.

The TYs have been working extremely hard under the guidance of Ms. Kenny in CSPE classes since winning one of the Irish Euroscola places in November to visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Sophie delivered the following speech in French:

"Good morning everyone,
My name is Sophie and I attend Stratford College in Dublin, Ireland. Ireland is a small island nation that joined the EU in 1973. Ireland's population is 4 and a half million, with an even larger diaspora throughout the world. There are about 150 students in our school, with a diverse student body. This is partly attributed to our Jewish ethos and inclusive and multi-denominational environment. In the video we submitted we asserted that young people are the future and that our voices are necessary in politics. All of us stand by this opinion, and being in this room today is frankly surreal, I think, for all of us. We also expressed the importance of the motto under which the EU functions: United in Diversity. In current political climates this is something that we agree should be at the forefront of our minds. We are very grateful to be here and are very excited to work with all of you. Thank you."

Everyone back in Stratford was able to watch the event as it was live-streamed from the European Parliament. We are all very proud of you all. A huge thanks to Ms. Kenny for organising the trip in a very short time.
