TY student, Des, spent a considerable time building a model of a Greek Trireme for his Classical Studies project. He explains in this blog what was involved.

"For the project, I had to pick one story from the different books in the Odyssey. I chose the Cyclops story about Odysseus and his ship. I did a Greek a Trireme. First I got a lettuce basket from my dad's cafe. I made the base first and built around it with coffee stirrers that were 7 inches wide. I then put a deck on top (also made from the basket). Benches for the crew were stuck down and I made the oars from bamboo chop sticks.

I made the sail with an old white vest which I dipped into water which had 11 teabags in it. I let it stay there for a while, then let it dry.  Then I took some flour, made the flour and water 'gluey' and put the vest into it, which I then wrung out. I used an iron to get the material hard for the sails. I rang my granny in Bulgaria for advice to do all this work to make the sail look authentic.

It took me about 2 1/2 weeks do complete this model."
