The visit began with a whole-school assembly, where Dr. McAleese spoke openly about her journey; from studying law to becoming the eighth President of Ireland, Dr. McAleese shared her experiences and challenges she faced. Dr. McAleese emphasised the importance of resilience, education, and staying true to your values. Students were in awe of her inspiring stories, advice, and personal anecdotes she shared with us.
Throughout the assembly, she encouraged students to remain confident, caring, and courageous in following their ambitions. Her stories from her time in office gave us a fascinating insight into growing up during the Troubles, Irish politics, and the responsibilities of representing the country on an international stage, as well as the everyday challenges such as ordering Chinese food to the Áras an Uachtaráin.
Following the assembly, a smaller group of about 12 students from all years had the opportunity to partake in a smaller Q&A session with Dr. McAleese. This discussion allowed students to ask and learn more about topics such as gender equality, third-level education, and some of Dr. McAleese's proudest moments. Dr. McAleese answered each question with honesty and clarity, creating a truly engaging and inspiring atmosphere. Students commented afterwards on how approachable and friendly she was, and how valuable it was to hear directly from someone with a lifelong journey of learning and pursuing her dreams.
The visit was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved and inspired everyone who attended. Stratford is extremely grateful to Dr. McAleese for taking the time to visit and inspire students through her experiences. A big thank you to everyone who made the visit possible.
