Citizen Science: Stratford students invited to participate in European/UCD 'BigO' research study

The European-funded BigO research study aims to lower childhood obesity rates by collecting, visualizing and analyzing BigData on young people's behavioural patterns and their environment. 1st to 4th Year students, and 5th/6th Year Computer Science students are being invited to participate in this research project from 7th - 18th December which is being co-ordinated by UCD researchers and led by UCD Professor Tahar Kechadi.

Students who consent (in consultation with their parents/guardians) to taking part in this research study will install the 'myBigO' app on their phone (android or apple).

For two weeks (7th - 18th December) students will take photographs of their own meals and of food advertisements. The app automatically records motion and location. All data is anonymised and is fully GDPR-compliant as outlined in detail in the consent form.

The teachers/students invited to participate from Stratford College are as follows:

  • 1st Years: Mr Brilly (Business - food advertising), Ms Cahill (Science - nutrition) and Mr Fennell (Science - nutrition)
  • 2nd Years, 3rd Years & TYs: Ms Finnegan (PE - being active; Wellbeing - being informed)
  • 5th & 6th Year Computer Science students: Ms O'Kelly (data analytics)

Project Overview

The ‘BigO Study’ is an EU-funded project during which students aged between 9 and 18 map their own health behaviours using the BigO mobile app. Healthy behaviours, such as eating healthy and doing exercise, are often discouraged because of the environment we live in. Help the researchers map the health behaviours and environment of students, so that the researchers can detect the places around Europe that need more attention with regard to public health policies.

Activities of citizen scientists: Use the myBigO app for two weeks to take photographs of your own meals and of food advertisements. The app automatically records motion and location.
Suitable for: Children and adolescents 9 -18 years old
Project Duration: 1st November 2020 – 28th February 2021
Expenditure of time: Download of the app and first-time questions will take you 3 minutes. Uploading foods pictures 2 minutes per day, for two weeks.

Stratford wins in annual Ides of March Quiz

Hugh congratulations to Stratford College Classics students who came 2nd and 3rd in the annual Ides of March Quiz in Blackrock College on Tuesday 28th April. Students from schools all over Dublin and further afield participated. Stratford scored an Olympian 41/46 to take second place and 40/46 to take third place.  Thank you to Ms. Donohoe and Ms McGill for coordinating this great event.

Appointment of Delia Donohoe to Permanent Deputy Principal

Delia Donohoe has been appointed as Permanent Deputy Principal of Stratford College, following her tenure as Acting Deputy Principal since August 2023. This milestone marks her 21st year as a dedicated member of the Stratford community, where she has made a lasting contribution both in the classroom and in leadership.

Speaking about her appointment Chair of the Board of Management Ms. Aoife Cassidy said: “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Delia as Deputy Principal; she has been a leader and teacher at Stratford College for more than 20 years. During this time, she has served in an acting capacity as Deputy Principal, including over the last three years. She has strong leadership skills and an unwavering commitment and dedication to our school community. We have every confidence that she will continue to lead with the same energy, warmth and dedication in the years ahead. We are delighted to formally confirm Delia’s appointment and wish her every success in the role going forward.
