Mr. Kearns organised a wonderful trip to the Classics museum in UCD on Tuesday 9th May, facilitated by the museum curator Dr. Jo Day. The Transition Year students were divided into two groups for the visit.
One group were given a comprehensive explanation of a number of significant artefacts from the collection e.g. a sarcophagus, Greek red figure vases and stele inscriptions by Dr. Jo Day.
The other group experienced a handling collection of Greek and Roman artefacts, some dating back to the fifth century BCE. Mr. Kearns who had previously worked on the collection, gave a detailed description of the artefacts presented. Students were then allowed to handle the artefacts and record specific details such as weight, types of materials, measurements and make suggestions on what each artefact was used for. This made for a thoroughly engaging activity. Groups then swapped so they could experience both workshops.
Many thanks to Dr. Jo Day and Mr. Kearns for such an enjoyable afternoon.
Hopefully some of the Transition Year students will be back in the museum in the not too distant future.
