Stratford celebrates Poetry Day Ireland

NEWS / 4 May 2022

#PoetryDayIrl - For Poetry Day Ireland on the 28th of April, 2nd year and 5th year students recited poems dedicated to those affected by the war in Ukraine. Students previously raised €465 for Concern's Emergency relief fund during Feile in March, and were then inspired to write these poems as part of a module on protest poetry.

Ms Talbot began by reading the UK poet Laureate, Simon Armitage's poem 'Resistance' which draws on some of those first shocking images we saw broadcast on the news of the crowds of people trying to flee at the train stations:

toddlers passed

over heads and shoulders, lifetimes stowed

in luggage racks

Afterwards, 3rd years planted Lavender plants in pots around the canopy to symbolise healing and peace in honour of these people in the face of the ongoing war. In the long term we hope these plants will also encourage our school-going bee population to thrive and help pollinate our blossoming apple trees and wildflowers.

The poets that read their work on the day were: Joseph Mudrak, Amelie Gibbons, Sarah Nelkin, and Tristan Traynor. Thanks to everyone who attended, and to everyone who donated to our Ukraine fundraiser.
