NEWS / 20 November 2013

Throughout November, TY Classical Studies students were extremely busy creating their Spartan Classical projects. Ms. Donohoe took photos of them hard at work. The following blogs display the work that the did for the projects.

TY SPARTA PROJECT

Congratulations to all of the TY Classical Studies students who presented spectacular projects on the 18th and 25th of November 2013.

We started our Sparta module on 16th September and looked at a number of key areas including an Introduction to Sparta, Athens Vs Sparta, the Agoge, Battle of Thermopylae and the unique role of women in Spartan society. Before starting work on group projects, we watched the graphic and thrilling film 300.

As part of AFL (Assessment for Learning), students were asked to pick from one of four topics an area they would like to work on. Their finished projects would account for 10% of final year result. Students could choose from
1.    Growing up in Sparta
2.    Women in Sparta
3.    The Battle of Thermopylae
4.    Interior design: transform a section of the Classics room.

Each group had to present their work to the class and each student submitted an account of their role in the project. This account was to be app. 200 words per student. Students were asked to reflect on their experience of group work and how they went about their research. Each group also had to supply a hand out to accompany their presentation.

The presentations and finished pieces of work were exceptional. I could not pick a favourite as the standard was so impressive across all four groups. The variety and detail of projects was a joy to see and highlighted the benefits of continuous assessment through different means. WELL DONE TO ALL STUDENTS and thank you for all your hard work.  (Click on blog title for more photos.)
