5th Year Geography students study the physical and social effects of the recent Japanese earthquake

NEWS / 5 April 2011

Stratford College held a minute's silence at the recent Seachtain na Gaeilge concert as a sign of respect to the Japanese people. Lucy Murphy (5th Year) describes what her geography class has learned about the impact of the recent earthquake and tsunami on Japan.

Japanese tsunami March 2011Three weeks after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the 5th year geography class have studied the physical and social effects the earthquake had on Japan. As a geography student I found the devastation caused by the earthquake, which measured 9.0 on the Richter scale, to be shocking and furthermore considering the similarities between this earthquake and the 2004 South Asian earthquake, I found it remarkable that such substantial destruction can occur twice in less than a decade.   (Click on thumbnail to open an enlarged version of image. ))

On the 11th March a tsunami devasted Japan.  As a school we wish to extend our sympathy to the Japanese people.  At our Seachtain na Gaeilge concert the school held a minute's silence as a sign of respect to the Japanese people.  See before and after images:
