World Book Day 2018 ... the great snow-in

NEWS / 5 March 2018

World Book Day was celebrated on Thursday, 1st March... however the snow stopped our school celebrations this year. The plans were for a book sale and to dress up (it was also Purim on the 1st March). The 1st Years did work hard on our entry for the World Book Day Award. Unfortunately we didn't win any prize this year.

The theme for this year's competition was: "flying high with reading"

This is our entry and it is worth noting that the 1st Years did this work over three classes - art with Ms. Mahon, English with Ms. Talbot and in Computer Studies with Ms O'Kelly. Enjoy!

"Stratford College is completely in with reading.

We have two libraries and a professional librarian (Ms. O’Kelly) which not many schools in Ireland have. The books we read consist of Skulduggery Pleasant: The Living - or should I say dead skeleton detective - and Sherlock Holmes and his reluctant partner John Watson who fight crime and those who join it.

And we don’t just read, we write too - like First Years Gothic stories and “The Monster That Came One Night” and “Snitches Get Stiches”, which truly fill you with utter terror.

Also, we wrote poems as well such as, “Dreaming”. We also did recitals where we read our poems out loud in the library at lunchtime and our biggest achievement to date is we managed to write and publish our own book of poems. In third year they are also doing Shakespeare and he’s nothing short of amazing - plays like the “Merchant of Venice” and “Hamlet” both overflowing with drama and emotion.

And the TYs celebrate World book Day more than most. Every week the Library Prefects listen to pupils read in Stratford National School, where each classroom has its own Library. The Library Prefects and Ms O’Kelly organize the annual Harry Potter quiz too with pupils from 1st to 6th class in the National School. Finally they are the ones that organize World Book Day for us in the secondary school with Ms. O’Kelly."
