'The Julius Caesar Variety Show', written by Joey Nesbitt, is truly one of the most interesting and innovative plays I have seen. The play follows 3 actors from wildly different backgrounds who are auditioning for roles in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar while a riot rages outside the theatre, on top of an 'unconventional' director who pushes the actors way past their limits.
The actors, and even the whole premise of the play, break the 4th wall throughout the runtime of the play. I.E., the actors and director routinely walk past the audience, the director talks to the lighting crew, and the riots can be heard behind the exit door. Not only is this an incredibly clever use of the medium of theatre, but personally it really drew me into the story.
Additionally, the actors are incredibly humorous and their performances were excellent. They really sold their slow spiral into insanity, which culminates in the incredibly shocking climax of the play.
Overall, even though I personally am not a huge fan of theatre, I found the Julius Caesar Variety Show to be an incredibly enjoyable experience.
