TY students participate in Community Week

NEWS / 25 April 2012

During the week beginning 26th March, TY students worked in a variety of locations as part of Community week. Alice Murphy and Katie McCrea explain what they experienced during the week.

Helping handFor Community Week (the week of the 26th March), I helped out in the Women’s Refuge in Rathmines. My classmate, Rachel, and I assisted in the children’s day care centre. The refuge is a brilliant facility to have for women (men over 16 are not allowed in- a word of warning to people interested in a placement!). There was a lovely, friendly atmosphere - even though I didn’t enjoy having my hair decorated with play doh on a few occasions.

I feel like I learnt a lot about the workings of the Refuge and I grew to respect greatly the work that they do.  I felt like this was a brilliant placement and would recommend that TYs in the future try to get a chance to work there.

Colouring PencilsI was working in a primary school, Mater Dei on Basin Lane. I was working in second class and overall thought it was an interesting experience. I felt like I really helped out by working with the kids on Communion and art, as well as teaching an art and a music class.

The school is considered disadvantaged and it was a two minute walk from my house so I am glad I was in my local community.
