Stratford Basketball under 19's took on The High School in their annual challenge Shield Cup. This match was a high intensity stakes match as High School had won their Leinster regional under 19 cup final and Stratford boys had similar under 16 success.  This derby game was hugely awaited with bated breath as to how Stratford could cope with a bigger team and a huge 20 man squad.  The rivalry was intense and the High School were clear favourites.

The game began with High School racing into a 8-2 lead as Stratford struggled to get their composure and rhythm... but slowly they clawed their way into the game with Captain Fantastic Tomer putting in some immense drives to bring the score to 10-7 then 16-14 to High School.  Stratford were hampered by a small bench but they were huge in stature. Stratford were not bigger physically but their unbelievable athleticism Mori, Louis and Josh were crashing boards, swatting attempted shots and putting in unbelievable shifts on defence. Adam K was his usual energetic self and whilst a few shots did not drop he changed his game abase a stupendous drive to finish off an amazing lay-up. Colin was mighty in defence and nullified their huge threat on the inside by depriving him of any possession or clean ball.  Josh had a few missed shots but then turned his game around incredibly with scintillating runs and drives and two consecutive big baskets.  Half time had the teams all square 24-24.

The second half was a Tomer masterpiece ... as Tomer ended the game with 25 points. The referee commenting after the game that "he was unstoppable".  Conor on a senior debut was invaluable on giving our two inside players rest time and defended with great honour.  A game changer close to the end of third quarter break was a super 3 pointer from debutant Brodie for the U19's.  Brodie further embellished his fabulous performance with safe retention of possession and winning strong boards defensively and offensively.  The Stratford coach could be heard saying that rebounding and defence wins games and Louis has epitomised that quote all season.  The huge contributions from Tomer and Mori allowed Stratford to build up a cushion of a lead and close the game at 47-38, a truly remarkable feat and achievement.  Coach O Callaghan at the risk of too much repetition could be heard saying saying that he was so proud of Stratford's 8 Gladiators and he thought they should be called "the magnificent 8".

A word of immense thanks and shout out must also be said to our Management team and supporters, Kit and Water Oliver and Ethan ; Logistics Arthur ,  table score sheets and clock Lily M and Jenna, as well as equipment manager, Shea.
