Second Green Flag (for energy) formally raised after the Awards Ceremony

NEWS / 27 October 2015

The theme of this year's Awards Ceremony on Friday, 23rd October, was renewable energy - in light of Stratford's Green Schools Committee formally raising its second Green Flag for Energy. Green Schools organised for an electric car to come to the school with ESB Cars. Students had great fun getting into it prior to the start of the Awards Ceremony!

The annual Awards Ceremony was held on Friday, 23rd October in the school hall. Guests of Honour at the Awards Ceremony were Oisín Orpen, from the Commercial Team of ESB Cars and Ciara Norton, from An Taisce.

Stratford's second Green Flag (for Energy), was officially raised after the Awards Ceremony with Ciara Norton. In addition Green Schools had invited Oisín Orpen to bring an electric car which was parked in front of the school. Students got to sit in the car and pretend to drive it! Go to the 2015-2016 web gallery to see lots of photos!

Last year, we were awarded another Green Flag, it was for the conservation of energy. The Green Schools committee, led by Carmel and Christina worked continuously throughout the year, and the rest of the school. We got to work trying to reduce the amount of energy consumed in the school. We checked class rooms at break time every day and made sure all electrical appliances were switched off. We turned off lights on sunny day, and also had an Energy day, in which we turned off all lights, computers etc. for two hours. It was tough work, but it paid off in the end and we were all very proud to have yet another Green Flag.

Electric cars are less expensive to operate than regular cars. They are less expensive than regular cars by a factor of ten over fossil fuels. Electric cars can go very fast and are equally as safe as other cars. Most major car manufacturers make and sell hybrid cars. Electric cars include less pollution and quieter.

I really enjoyed seeing this car. The car of the future! The Nissan Leaf had no engine but a battery. The car was environmentally friendly, and in my opinion, should be used more around the world. We should fight for the electric car, and for a greener world.
