Richard Branson opens Spaceport in New Mexico

NEWS / 19 October 2011

Ms. McCarthy reports on the world's first spaceport which will give the public a chance to see Earth from space.

Spaceport, New MexicoIn the not too distant future deciding where to go on holidays will be more interesting thanks to Richard Branson. In a ceremony on Monday which was attended by media and former astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Richard Branson opened the world’s first spaceport in New Mexico. Virgin Galactic was set up in 1999 and the company has been researching and developing spaceships which will give the public a chance to see Earth from space. In recent years two spaceships have been developed with the most recent ship called WhiteKnightTwo or VMS "Eve". (Click on thumbnail to open an enlarged version of image.)

The Virgin Galactic Ships work by carrying out an air launch of the spaceships, which overcomes the safety issues associated with ground launches. Tickets for rides aboard WhiteKnightTwo cost $200,000. The 2 1/2-hour flights will include about five minutes of weightlessness and views of Earth that until now only astronauts have been able to experience. NASA has signed up recently with Virgin Atlantic to carry out research flights on the ship in the near future. For more information about the ships see www.virgingalactic.com! Ms. McCarthy
