Mrs. Walsh brought in her father's collection of German stamps from the 1930's on Tuesday, 9th April. Jessica Nelkin (3rd Year) describes how interesting she found them.

Mrs Walsh brought in stamps from her father's collection of German stamps from before World War II.

I found these really interesting. They show how bad inflation was- some stamps were 150 mark and went up to around 300 mark (these were the cheaper ones) but some went into the thousands or even millions. Some stamps also had new amounts printed over the original amount.

Propaganda is evident, as one stamp said "One people, one Führer" and another had an image of a 'typical Aryan' holding a flaming torch with horses in the background. Many had swastikas on them. However, Mrs Walsh's father didn't find this strange, as he thought it was normal, growing up as a young Jewish boy in Germany. (Click on blog title to see more photos.)
