On Monday 12th of March first years were fortunate enough to visit Dubray Books in the Swan Centre, Rathmines. We were invited to meet and talk to renowned author Anna Carey. Carey is a popular author who has won the Senior Children’s book prize at the Irish Book Awards for a book written in 2011 called: ‘The Real Rebecca’. Recently she has written a book about suffragettes campaigning for women’s rights in Ireland in 1912 called: ‘Mollie on the March’.
We were very warmly greeted by one of the staff members, who asked us to huddle around near Carey, who was standing alongside a table displaying her books. She began talking about her recent book ‘Mollie on the March’. She described how Mollie, a 14 year - old girl, alongside her friend Nora, attempt to become suffragettes. However, not everything goes to plan as Nora’s terrible cousin, her awful brother and an annoying dog continuously interfere with their plans!
Carey also mentioned her inspirations for the book. She said that she had an eccentric Geography teacher, whose fictional counterpart exists in the story, her neighbour’s dog and her annoying siblings! It may be relatable for some of us who actually do have (annoying!) siblings. Afterwards, she read out an extract from the book, and we all asked her lots of questions on what it feels like to be an author, did you expect to be an author, etc.
Overall I think it was a very enjoyable experience and I hope we get to do these more often, and I am looking forward to reading more of the book when I get the chance.
