On the 28th of September 2026, the first-year students of 1X learned about the origin of the popular rowing song of "Óró Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile." This song describes Gráinne Mhaol who fought for rights and against English rule and was held in captivity for an estimated 18 months.

This song was used specifically in the 19th century when many rowers needed to be in sync when rowing their oars. A rabhcánaí (shantyman) sung the song at the top of the boat, so the rowers had a beat to row to. It was also used as a marching song for the Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising. 1x experienced the 19th century, rowing altogether while singing the song.

Slán agus go raibh maith agaibh a chairde!
