On Friday, 14th January, myself and Alice Murphy, a fellow 3rd year student, competed in the Poetry Aloud semi-final held in the National Library on Kildare Street. Poetry Aloud is a nationwide spoken poetry competition and the regional heats took place in November. We each had to speak a set poem, Swineherd, by Eileann Ní Chuileanain, and a poem of our choice from a selection of anthologies. We and about 90 other students from around the country were assessed by a panel of judges, among them the accomplished author Siobhán Parkinson, and the poet Eileann Ní Chuilleanain. Myself and 20 other students got through to the final held later that day. It was overall an enjoyable and memorable experience.
