Bloomsday in Rathgar: 15th & 16th June

Bloomsday celebrates 16th June 1904, the day depicted in James Joyce's Ulysses. As part of the Bloomsday Festival (11th - 16th June), Rathgar village is celebrating Bloomsday on Saturday 15th from 1pm onwards.  On Sunday, 16th June 2019 local historian and auther, Ged Walsh is leading an historical literary walk around Rathgar starting from Herzog Park (beside Rathgar Tennis Club) starting at 11am.

Rathgar is the birthplace of James Joyce and this historical literary walk will inform you about the area's rich history and connections to Ulysses. Bloomsday is named after the main character of the book, Leopold Bloom. Ulysses charts Bloom's wanderings around Dublin. 

The first Bloomsday in Dublin was celebrated in 1954 by Irish authors Patrick Kavanagh, Flann O'Brien and Anthony Cronin. See the Bloomsday Festival website for more details of events around Dublin. The festival runs from 11th - 16th June.

The 5th years visited the Cancer Revolution Exhibition in St Stephen's Green to learn about the disease itself as well as the old and modern techniques in its treatment and how Irish scientists and doctors have contributed to the research. This event backed up the learning contained in the new Biology Specification as well as the SPHE curriculum. Field trips like this are essential for students in the new science specification so that they can experience science in real time and see real world applications of the classroom learning.
