5th Year Art Student wins the Reinvent Fashion School Competition for Secondary Schools

NEWS / 3 June 2011

Congratulations to Ailbhe MacMahon (5th Year) who was the overall winner of the 2011 Reinvent Fashion School Competition hosted by Griffith College, Dublin on Wednesday, 25th May. The 2010 event saw over 170 entries from 40 schools around the country.

Reinvent Fashion CompetitionThe annual Griffith College Creative Show on Wednesday, 25th May, was an evening that had been highly anticipated by many, including finalists of the Reinvent Fashion competition like myself. I had entered the competition months previously, and my surprise of being picked as one of the six finalists to have their dress modelled professionally in Griffith College, Dublin's Creative Show 2011 was still resonant.

Myself and Miss Mahon caught glimpses of Louis Copeland and Peter O'Brien through the crowd as the lights dimmed and the show started. Aside from our dresses, products of the College's Creative Department were on show, presenting an interesting mix of designs. I know everyone says this, but I truly didn't expect to win, which explained the look of shock on my face as I was awarded a bouquet of flowers and a new sewing machine.  (Click on thumbnail to open an enlarged version of photo.)

Our days were busy from the moment we woke up till the moment our heads hit the pillows, but every second of it was enjoyed. We partook in many activities, both in and out of the water. The water activities were pier jumping, paddleboarding, swimming and bodyboarding, a favourite amongst the group. On land, we did Archery, climbing, human foosball, life-sized board games and lots of table tennis. After the activities we were all famished, our hunger was erased in an instant as the chefs there prepared delicious meals. Despite the mixed weather we still got into the water. We loved every second of it, but we also loved the hot showers afterwards! In our Irish class we expanded our vocabulary, learning new words for the activities we did, then wrote and performed scripts as Gaeilge that included the new vocabulary.
