The 2nd Vs 3rd years annual Classical Studies Quiz truly was an epic battle on 21st December. There were 8 teams in total with four teams from 2nd year and four teams from 3rd year.
The students suggested that this year we calculate the winners based on a class average rather than one specific group winning. I have to admit this is very modern, seeing that there was no such thing in the ancient Olympics as second or third place or any team sports. Back then it was all about the individual and their city state (Polis). Nice to see that our students, some 2793 years after the first Olympic games were held are team players! Saying that tension was in the air from the first question, growing steadily until the final round.
When all scores were counted, the third years beat the second years by less than one point overall. The knowledge displayed by all teams on the day was exceptional and impressive. We had 6 rounds on Homer's Iliad and a number of spot prize questions.
Well done to everyone who participated and a particular well done to The Gorgons with a team total of 41.5 out of a possible 45 points.
A big thank you to Mr. Kearns, Ms. Caspi, 6th years, Anna Baker and Tim Murphy for all their help on the day.
Equally fitting was the battle between the two 1st Year Classics classes. Well done to the winners - Jack, Allan, Ross and Senan!
