2nd Year English students write their own poems in a Poetry Workshop

NEWS / 24 April 2012

During March, 2nd Year English students participated in a Poetry Workshop. They could write their own poems ranging from a lyric to a Haiku.

As part of their Poetry Unit, Second year students participated in a Poetry Workshop. The students were required to create their own poems ranging from a lyric to a Haiku. As preparation for our national holiday, St Patrick's Day, we brainstormed what it means to be Irish. In pairs, the students created a series of ballads. Their ballads needed to be at least four quatrains in length, adhere to an 8/6/8/6 syllable division and utilise an a/b/c/b rhyming scheme. They were also assessed on their ability to project their voice, to intonate, to use dramatic pause and to pace themselves appropriately. Their mark is worth 5% of their Summer exam. I think they managed to complete their task admirably. Enjoy!
