2nd Year English students perform poems and songs

NEWS / 1 May 2013

The 2nd Year English students have just completed their Oral Literacy module. Ms. Reynolds explains what that involved for each student who had to perform a text - a poem or song - in front of the class. Watch a short video of the top performances.

We just completed our Oral Literacy Module and I'm delighted with the results. This year each student was assigned a text based on their personal interests which they had to learn off by heart and perform for their classmates. The texts varied from a tense extract from Jack London's 'The Call of the Wild', to Billy Bragg and Wilco's song lyrics, 'Birds and Ships'. Peer assessment determined the top three performances. The students were given the marking scheme and had to apply it to the performance: 50% Knowledge of piece, 30% for pace, pitch, intonation and body language, 20% Interpretation. Evan was the overall winner with his performance of 'Do not stand at my grave and weep' by Anonymous. Second place was Jennifer performing Leonard Cohen's, 'Twelve O'Clock Chant' and lastly in third place was Isabelle performing Austin Clarke's 'The Planter's Daughter'.
