2nd Year English students give Powerpoint Poetry Presentations

NEWS / 8 March 2012

The 2nd Year English class have each just given a Poetry presentation in front of their class. The class evaluated each other as well as themselves. View a selection of the presentations online by Emer Downes, Kate Dempsey and Fiona Maguire.

Ms. Reynolds explains what the students had to do and how the assessment was marked. "Below is a selection of Second Year's PowerPoint Poetry Presentations by Emer Downes, Kate Dempsey and Fiona Maguire.

Assignment: They were asked to choose a poet and to research five poems. Their presentation had to include biographical information, knowledge of theme and personal response. There were also asked to recite one of these poems from memory.

Assessment: Continuous assessment = 10% of their Summer Exams.
Each student was provided with the marking criteria (see below) and they had to evaluate each other's performance; they also had to engage in self assessment too - indicating where their strengths and weaknesses were. After four presentations we calculated who the winner was, this helped them to clarify what was required and to aid the remaining presentations.

* Marking Criteria
50% = Content and format of presentation: inclusion of biographical information, five poems, thematic analysis and personal response.
30% = Poetry Recital: Accurate recital, intonation, use of dramatic pause, voice projection, emotive delivery and pace.
20% = Overall impression."
