The second years finished reading Plautus' play "The Swaggering Soldier" in class on Tuesday, 7th March.

Second years finished reading Plautus' play The Swaggering Soldier in class today. This Roman comedy was written in the 3rd century BCE. Two thousand and three hundred years later we are still finding the play amusing and entertaining. The moral of the play is that good triumphs over evil. In class, students discussed this theme with eloquence and interest. The play is the prescribed text for Topic 7 in the Junior Certificate - The Roman Theatre - Comedy.

After finishing reading the play we looked at the lyrics to a number of songs where the lyrics echo the thoughts of the protagonist Pyrgopolynices.
These were:
Carly Simon's "You're so vain"
Justin Bieber "Boyfriend"
Cher Lloyd "Swagger Jagger"

Well done to all of the 2nd years for participating with such enthusiasm.

Ms. Donohoe
