3rd Year History students, Derinn MacMahon and Grace O’Dwyer, describe the trip to the Dáil on Friday, 21st November.
The third and second years of Stratford College went to visit the Dáil on Friday the 21st of November 2014. We went with Ms Kenny, Ms Reynolds and Ms Cooper. We were invited there under the authorisation of TD Kevin Humphreys. We took the Dublin Bus into town and we were greeted by our tour guide, Kevin Humphreys, TD.
He first took us to see a Dáil debate in session. Then we were taken on a tour of the rest of the Dáil. We learned about the role of the Taoiseach and the Dáil system. We also learned about the history of Leinster House which was very interesting. We were also shown different portraits of Irish leaders in history. We were allowed inside of the Seanad Chamber and noticed the architecture. The tour guide mentioned how the same architect designed the Oval Office of the White House in the United States and how they had similar designs. Kevin Humphreys then brought us into a meeting room on the Dáil grounds and let us ask any questions we had lingering in our minds. After this, we watched the end of the debate on the Domestic Violence (Amendment) Bill 2014. Overall we found our visit to Dáil Eireann to be informative and helpful in our studies and made us understand more about how our country is run in politics in Ireland.

Our Transition Year (TY) students hosted a successful coffee morning in the school hall to raise funds for Our Lady's Hospice & Care Services in Harold's Cross. Year groups visited the hall in turn for tea, coffee, and treats. Thanks to Ms. Maxwell, Ms. Talbot, Ms. McGill and all our TY students.

On Wednesday, the 23rd of September, a group of us TY students had the opportunity to welcome Irish writer Elaine Garvey to our school, where we took part in a two-hour workshop with her. On Friday the 25th of September, we embarked on our weekly trip which brought us northside, to Glasnevin Cemetery, so write Ianis, Vihaan and Matthew B (TY Weekly editors).
Some of our Chinese students celebrated the Mooncake Festival this morning with traditional treats, and stories about the holiday. The round shape of the mooncakes mirrors the bright harvest moon, symbolizing family togetherness and completeness.
