1st Year Science students learn about static electricity

NEWS / 22 March 2012

In Science class this week, 20th March, 1st Year students did experiments to learn about static electricity

Static elecricityStatic ElectricityElectricity was first discovered in 600 BC by Thales de Miletus, a Greek philosopher. He noticed that a hard yellow substance called amber had a mysterious property. When he rubbed it with wool or fur, it attracted light materials such as hair and dust.

Many other substances have similar properties to amber. In today's class we rubbed a pen in our hair or jumper, brought it close to a thin stream of water and the water was attracted to the pen. We also blew up balloons and rubbed them in our hair and our hair stood up. The balloons also stuck to the ceiling.(Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of image.)
