On Monday, 18th February, the 1st Year Jewish Studies class visited the mikvah [ritual bath], in the grounds of the Dublin Hebrew Congregation in Terenure. A mikvah is one of the most important buildings in a Jewish community. It is a small pool, below ground level; the water is a mix of rain and tap-water.
The mikvah is used for spiritual cleansing, and anyone using it must wash themselves thoroughly before getting in. It's used by brides before their weddings, married women use it regularly, men use it occasionally, and converts dip in it as the last step of conversion. New utensils are dipped in it before first use. (Click on blog title to see more photos.)
