Golden Jubilee Art Exhibition: Artist-in-Residence - Christopher Banahan

Born in Nottingham to Irish parents, Christopher Banahan received a First Class Honours degree in Fine Arts at Trent University in 1981. He went on to obtain an MA in Fine Arts from Goldsmith’s College in London, and became a Rome Scholar in the British School of Rome in 1990. Much of his work is influenced by his studies in Rome. His distinctive style derives from that of ancient Roman frescoes, such as those found in Pompeii. Chris’s paintings have a unique “aged” look, brought about by the unusual techniques he employs in his artwork. These techniques can be clearly seen in the portraits of both students and teachers on which he worked for eight weeks and on the panels influenced by classical Hebrew manuscripts. The portraits have a particular relevance to the Jubilee celebrations of Stratford College, in that they enable the students of today to reflect on the present and the students of tomorrow to reflect on the past. Diamond Jubilee Concert and Open Day, 16th November 2014

Over 400 people were here to mark the significant occasion of our Diamond Jubilee and the launch of our book '60 Years a Growing'.  Thanks to our past pupils who sang at this so beautifully, our current students who either read extracts from our book or sang in the choir and/or who played solo instruments, to our guest speaker and past parent, Mr John Banville and our students for acting as hosts on the day. Science Week, 10th - 14th November 2014

This year was a very busy schedule for Science students in Stratford. Ms. McCarthy and Ms. O'Sullivan organised many different events, including trips to Trinity, DIT, the Natural History Museum, the ISTA Science Quiz in the RDS and the highlight of the week, W5 in Belfast. Awards Ceremony, 24th October 2014

The annual Awards Ceremony was held on Friday, 24th October in the school hall. Guest of Honour at the Awards Ceremony was 15 year old Harry McCann, founder of Kid Tech and founder member of the Digital Youth Council. Students, teachers, parents and past-pupils were treated to a wonderful musical interlude - you can listen back to them on the podcasts. Well done to all the students who received an Award on the day and to all students for their own personal achievements.

TY Trip to Delphi, 1st - 4th September 2014

The TY students went to Delphi during the first week in September where they were able to enjoy it to the utmost because of the beautiful weather. It was only on the last day that the weather turned against them, but that is part of the Delphi experience! The TY students did lots of different activities - including canoeing, surfing and climbing - and according to Ms. Finnegan really pushed themselves to do things they normally wouldn't attempt. Thanks to Ms. Finnegan for organising the trip and to Ms. Cooper for also coming on the trip.

6th Year Graduation, 16th May 2014

On Friday, 16th May, the school hall was beautifully arranged by Mrs. Bondi and the Student Council for the 6th Year Graduation. The speeches were thought provoking by Ms. Gordon, Student Council Representatives and the Chairman of the Stratford College Parents Association. There were a number of musical interludes provided by the students and a terrific 6th Year Graduation video. Parents, teachers, friends and past-pupils enjoyed a wonderful meal managed by Mrs. Gresak. Thank you to Brendan also for having the hall and school looking so splendid.

TY Graduation and Sports Assembly, 12th May 2014

The Sports Assembly was held as part of the Transition Year Graduation on Monday, 12th May. Prizes were presented to students who won events on Sports Day. Well done to everyone! Well done to the Transition Year students who also graduated on the same day. They showed us their Irish Film, played music, sang individually and as a whole group, and virtually all the students spoke about different aspects of their experience in Transition Year. They also put together a TY video which captured their experiences of the year - it can be viewed on the Stratford YouTube channel.

Sports Day, 6th May 2014

Sports Day 2014 dawned to a sunny morning with lots of white clouds blown by the wind. With just a few showers forecast for the afternoon, the weather was perfect for all the activities organised by Ms. Finnegan. Sports Day kicked off at 11:15am with Basketball and Football, while there was ongoing amusement with the Sumo Suits and the blow-up Obstacle Course. The Three-Legged race finished off the morning's activities. After lunch, sprints, tug-of-war and more basketball and football matches were held. It was a very chilled day with musical entertainment provided by the the 5th Year students. Well done to Ms. Finnegan and to all the students who help her make it a great day!
