επιφ. συγχαρητήρια to the five students who entered the Classical Studies speech competition in Trinity College on Thursday, 7th March, organised by the CAIT (Classical Association of Ireland - Teachers) and the Classics department TCD. All of our students performed brilliantly on the night. 35 students competed in the Leaving Certificate Classical Studies category from secondary schools all over the country.
Stratford College came 1st and 3rd - a truly remarkable achievement. Alice Murphy (5th year) came first for her powerful and moving recital from Sophocles' Antigone. Alice chose a modern version by the Scottish poet Liz Lochhead. Katie Richardson McCrea (5th year) came third for her poignant and heartfelt recital from Euripides' Medea. Evan Matthews (2nd year) came 3rd in the Junior Certificate Classical Studies category for his entertaining and informative recital from Plautus' The Swaggering Soldier. Well done to Hugh Cannon (5th year) for his intense and dramatic recital from Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound and to Diarmaid Kelly (5th year) for his convincing and engaging recital from Sophocles' Oedipus Rex.
It is the second year of the competition and Stratford's first time to have entered. I think it is fair to say the Classical Studies Speech competition will become an annual fixture on our Classical Studies calender.
