Three 5th Year students complete 25km An Gaisce walk

NEWS / 14 September 2011

5th Year students, Hannah Hughes, John Nolan and Fearghal Kelleher recount their experiences on their 25km walk as part of their An Gaisce award.

An GaisceHannah Hughes (5th Year): "Last year a few of the students, including myself, applied to do the Bronze An Gaisce award. As part of the award we have to do a 25km walk. Fearghal, Johan and I, out of fifth year, went up to Glendalough with Ms. Finnegan to complete the adventure journey portion of the award. The first walk we did was a long trek up a mountain that took approximately four and a half hours to complete. It was very difficult to begin with but once the hard part was done, it was very enjoyable. We stayed in a nice Youth Hostel where I got a whole room to myself! My favourite part of the trip was coming back after our long walk, changing into some clean dry clothes and watching a movie!"

John Nolan (5th Year): "Members of 5th Year competing for an An Gaisce award recently went on a hike in Glendalough. We hiked up the mountain and around Glendalough lake. It took two days. We stayed in a Youth Hostel. To get this award you had to cook and do a hike that lasts about six hours. The best thing was walking through the miner's village. The toughest part of the walk was going up the 600 steps at the start of the hike." (Click on thumbnail to open an enlarged version of photo.)
