Stratford Past Pupils Look Back: The Murphy Family

Stratford College
NEWS / 3 November 2016

Mr Barry Murphy, past Stratford N.S. Principal, and his three children contributed their memories of Stratford for the 60th Anniversary book, '60 Years A Growing', which was launched in November 2014.

My long and happy association with Stratford Schools began when I was appointed to the teaching staff of Zion National School in Bloomfield Avenue. On relocating to our present site in 1980 the School was renamed Stratford National School. Siobhan, Barry and Jennifer all acknowledge the very important contribution that the teachers of Stratford College made to their lives.

On leaving Stratford College in 1997 I pursued a 3rd level qualification in Bio Analytical Science. I was then recruited by Proctor & Gamble to take up a research position at their head office in the UK. I undertook
a third level qualification in IT and graduated with my degree from Portsmouth University in 2005. I have worked extensively in the financial sector as a consultant throughout Europe and South Africa. My present position is that of Change Specialist for Virgin Media in the UK. I have published a book on IT Service Management and give presentations both nationally and internationally. I believe my six years at Stratford College provided me with the necessary skills for my academic and professional career.

After leaving Stratford College in 2000 I completed a degree in Business and French in Trinity College. This 4 year degree included a year spent in France studying in a business school in Tours and working as an Accounts Assistant in Paris. After graduating from Trinity College I worked for the Bank of New York Mellon as a Fund Accountant before joining BDO where I have progressed to the position of Audit Manager. I am a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and also hold a certificate in Investment Management from the Certified Institute of Securities and Investments. I feel as though my 6 years in Stratford College provided me with an excellent foundation for both my academic and professional life. In particular I found the standard of language and accountancy tuition to be extremely high and this was something which benefitted me hugely during my university studies.
