After a decades-long hiatus, Stratford College entered an 11-a-side team into this season's FAI competition for U-15 boys. Having been drawn in group D of the Metropolitan League Division 3, the team traveled to Clondalkin to take on St Kevin's Community College.
The competition structure is similar to that of the Champions League, with a group-based league from which quarter-finalists will emerge.
After a steady start, the team conceded three goals in quick succession before regaining composure and steadying the ship.
A brace of goals either side of half time put the Stratford footballers back in contention who dominated the play for most of the second half. There were near misses, the crossbar and post were struck and the ball rolled agonisingly along the opposition goal-line in pursuit of an equaliser.
Ultimately, St. Kevin's pounced on a breaking ball to make the score 4-2 and put the result beyond doubt in the closing moments.
It was a valiant effort by the team who are preparing for the next match against St. Laurence's College in mid-November.
