The ISSU is the representative body for secondary school students in the Republic of Ireland, with the objective of supporting, uplifting, and defending student voice.
Day one of the conference consisted of ISSU members discussing and voting on key constitutional amendments/directive mandates impacting young adults, for example, lowering the voting age, supplying free period products in schools, and providing complimentary meals to second-level students. On the second day of the summit, students traveled to Liberty Hall Theatre in Dublin City to observe hustings from candidates standing for election on the National Student Executive [Coiste Gnó] and ISSU Presidency/Vice-Presidency [Uachtarán/Leas-Uachtarán.] Minister for Education, Norma Foley also briefly addressed student delegates on issues such as Leaving Cert reform and anti-bullying/respect [Cineáltas.]
“I particularly appreciated how the ISSU emphasised projecting the endeavour, dedication, and diverse skillset of student candidates at the election hustings” - Luke Higgins
“I grasped a greater understanding of the importance of student voice in relation to constitutional amendments and directive mandates during the virtual polling event” – Hugo Burke
Thanks to the ISSU and Liberty Hall Theatre for organising such an enriching and informative event!
