Rebecca Hewson makes it to televised final of ‘StarSearch’

NEWS / 11 December 2012

2nd Year student, Rebecca Hewson, describes what was involved in getting to the finals of the talent competition, 'StarSearch'.

Stage microphoneSince I have moved back to Ireland after living in Spain I found out about a lot of singing competitions. Most of them weren’t that important but then my older sister told me about 'StarSearch'.

'StarSearch' is a huge event that is looking for talent in Ireland and she said I had to go… she didn’t just say that... she had already signed me in for the auditions way before I even got back to Ireland. It all seemed planned before I even knew about it. When I heard, I got excited and nervous at the same time, but it didn’t matter. I was going to do it!

I’ve always wanted be a singer, I’ve been singing my whole life. I can't even count how many times my mom and my younger brothers have told me to shut-up in the house, when I just randomly start singing… So anyway I had to start preparing a song for 'StarSearch' and get myself organised. My sister kept going on about the way this competition is gonna change everything and... bla bla bla… so it seemed kinda of important.

The first audition was organised at the Compton Hotel. I remember being nervous and looking at how many other contestants were around me. Then the judges came in. They were trying to put this scary look on their faces on purpose to scare us all but it didn’t really work. I thought I was fine but when it was my turn to sing I was really nervous. After that the main judge came up to me and told me I did really well. I was over the moon. After that there were a few more rounds and semi-finals.

Finally the last round was the grand final. It was at the Tivoli Theatre. I sang "Get it right" by Glee. I was really excited and very nervous. It was going to be broadcast on television and the audience was full.

In the end I didn’t win but I wasn't upset because Greg French and Andrew Mann - two of the judges - came up to me and offered me to pop in the studio sometime and make some music and get going. I was delighted.

I really enjoyed 'StarSearch'. It was a great experience.
