Ellul is the sixth month in the Jewish calendar, which is usually around late summer/early autumn. During this month we start getting ready for the High Holy Days aka The 10 Days of Repentance. We think over our actions over the last year and apologise to people we may have done wrong to. We also need to do “teshuvah” (repentance) to G-d because we may have wrong done to him as well.
Things we do in Ellul
We blow the "shofar" (a ram’s horn) as a wakeup call to take a good hard look at ourselves. It is blown every day except Shabbat and the day before Rosh Hashanah.
We add Psalm 27 “The L-rd is my light and my help” in each of the three daily services.People try to do extra good deeds and giving more tzedaka (charity).
Starting from the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah at midnight, we do an extra tefillah called "Selichos" (prayers for forgiveness) these continue until the day before Rosh Hashanah. (Click on thumbnail to open an enlarged version of photo.)
