Introduction

I am writing this report to give a thorough account of my filming experience. As part of our second year film module myself, along with two of my peers, Hannah and Ross were given the task of filming  a short scene from Philadelphia here I come by Brian Friel. We got to choose which scene we would like to film and were responsible for our own costumes, props and sets.

Preparation

In preparation for our day of filming we were given time to become familiar with our scene. When that was done, we could then look for the appropriate costume and props to use. I myself took the role of director and editor so I prepared what filming app would work best and what type of equipment could be used for the actual filming. On the day of filming Ross kindly acted as Public Gar while Hannah performed as Madge.

Location

As for location we instantly found the perfect spot. Hannah thoughtfully allowed us to use her kitchen for filming. The kitchen really set the atmosphere and had enough space for me to move around and shoot different angles.

Problems

We did not face many problems during our filming process. Everything ran smoothly and was done very efficiently. Everyone made it on the day of filming and we finished our scene in good time. The only problem, was the fact that one of the scenes could not be edited. This meant that there was a pause in the film that was longer than we anticipated. However we worked through it and produced a fun and entertaining short movie.

Conclusion

I gained many new skills from this exercise. I learned how to direct a movie and edit it. I learned how to cope with any problems that occurred during the process of filming and I also learned how to manage the group and get my ideas across in an appropriate way so that everyone in the group was happy and felt that they were involved. Overall I loved having had this experience and I hope to do another filming module in the near future.

Recommendations

I really enjoyed this experience as it was challenging and let my creativity run wild. The only recommendations I would have are as follows:

1)    I would have liked if we were given more time to become familiar with our scene and more time to film it.
2)    I also would have liked if we were given tips on editing as that was all very new to me and I was worried the film would not be produced to a high standard because of this.
