TY's have an amazing trip to Berlin

NEWS / 21 March 2024

This month, the Fourth Years had an amazing TY trip to Berlin! On the morning of the 11th of March, we arrived at Dublin Airport at the early hour of 3 AM and embarked on a 2-hour plane ride to Berlin Airport.

When we landed, we took a short coach ride through the German countryside to the Sachsenhausen Memorial. Our tour guide Tatiana lead us through the memorial, showing us the deep and somber history of the area. It was a sobering experience, and we all found it profound and enlightening.

After leaving the Memorial, we took another coach ride to the Stasi Prison, where we were given a tour around the cells and facilities that were used to house the prisoners during the Cold War period in Berlin. Our tour guide gave us some insight on how the prisoners were psychologically manipulated into giving up information to the people imprisoning them.

Later we visited the Reichstag, which offered amazing views of Berlin, and gave us the opportunity to see the political heart of the city.

After our long and eventful day, we headed to our hotel which was lovely. We all had a great night's sleep, and we were ready for our next busy day.

After a delicious Continental breakfast, we went on our walking tour with Tatiana, seeing loads of historical sites such as the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the Holocaust Monument. We later visited the Olympic Stadium and the Topography of Terror. After our delicious dinner at Beth’s Cafe, we went back to the hotel.

Our next exciting day began with a visit to the Berliner Fernsehturn (Berlin TV Tower). We had some free time before we headed to the Jewish Museum, where we took in a compelling history through modern architecture and art.

Sadly, this was the end of our trip and we got the coach back to the airport for our flight home. We all really enjoyed our trip and the fascinating places we visited in Berlin.

This incredible trip would not have been possible without the teachers who arranged and organised it with those that came with us and made the experience even better.

Sincere thanks to Ms. Kenny, Ms. Finnegan, Ms. Gordon and Rabbi Wieder from all the TYs who are delighted to have been able to experience the beautiful city of Berlin.
