Green Schools working towards Water Flag in subjects across all years

NEWS / 13 March 2017

Ryan Baker, 5th Year, describes work done in many subjects, across all years in the past couple of months.

Green Schools has been working on obtaining the Water Flag with the help of the students and teachers in Stratford College. Students have been learning about the history of water in past civilisations, its components, its importance, and what we can do to conserve it.

As part of Maths class, the 3rd Years have created charts to represent the data from Green Schools water consumption surveys. This allowed the 3rd years to visually see how much water they consume on a daily/weekly basis and compare it to the ideal consumption of water in Ireland.

2nd Year English students took part in debates on Climate Change and the importance of the environment in our lives today, and whether it still has an important role in our lives. The results from these were very positive, and it allowed students to explore the topics of Global Warming and climate change with their class mates.

The 1st year Art students with the assistance of Ms Mahon created lovely posters for our energy, litter, waste and water campaigns. We used these poster throughout the school for our campaign, and it also made 1st Year students think about what our committee have been working on recently, and how to be creative with the environment.

3rd Year Irish students learned how to write an essay on the environment and on climate change. They also looked at vocabulary on the environment, which they all found very interesting.

History Students throughout the school learned about how people in history used water. For example, the Romans were very advanced and understood the importance of water, using aqueducts across the Roman Empire.

1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th year Geography Students looked at how the water cycle works, as well as sewage treatment plants. Transition Years did projects on the San Joquain Valley and Irrigation project in California.  They then presented these to their peers, showing a great understanding in the importance of water conservation and the impact humans can have on river processes.

Transition Year students learned some new words and phrases about water and the environment, with the help of Mr Priestley in French Class.

2nd and 3rd Years learned about water and the sewage system for their Junior Certificate course in Science. Both junior and senior years have studied global warming, ecosystems and pollution as part of Biology with Ms O’Sullivan.

The junior students have learnt about their role in the environment and the importance of stewardship.  The years have learned about the importance of saving water and marine litter as part of their Junior Certificate Course.

Ms Donohoe, the Classical Studies teacher and the Green Schools co-ordinator tries to incorporate the environment in her subject as much as possible, merging her two of her favourite passions in life.

The 1st years have been busy learning about the water meter system in Ireland and around the World, and they have looked at how it all works, with the help of Ms Brouder.

We at Green Schools are all very proud of the amount of work being done in class to ensure that students are aware of the importance of water, and the environment, and the big role it plays in our lives.
