The late American poet and essayist Adrienne Rich compared education to a mirror, and asked the question, what happens "when someone with the authority of the teacher describes our society and you are not in it?" This kind of experience she said, can be disorienting: "A moment of psychic disequilibrium as if you looked into a mirror and saw nothing."1
