The late American poet and essayist Adrienne Rich compared education to a mirror, and asked the question, what happens "when someone with the authority of the teacher describes our society and you are not in it?" This kind of experience she said, can be disorienting: "A moment of psychic disequilibrium as if you looked into a mirror and saw nothing."1

Today, we all share a goal to ensure that when students look into the mirror that the education system holds before them, they see reflected the diversity and values of our broad society.
