As the term of Student Council has come to an end, so has ours on the Green Schools Comittee, as the Leaving Certificate takes our utmost attention from now until June. This is a summary of what we have achieved:
-
Completed an environmental evaluation and done an action plan on how we can improve this.
-
Registered for the Holocaust Crocus Plants Scheme.
-
Registered for the Jack and Jill Foundation for the collection of recycled mobile phones and ink cartridges.
Finally I would like to say thanks to the Student Council, Ms Donohoe (Green Schools Staff Representative) and Ms. Gordon for all the help in making our school as Green as it can be. We are now just about ready to apply for a Green Flag and I wish the next committee the best of luck in getting the Green Flag.

On Wednesday, 19th January three members of the Malahide Community School (MCS) Student Council visited Stratford College for a tour of the school and to compare council techniques. The visiting council members sat in on one our Student Council meetings, where we discussed the results of a recent student survey and the activities of Green Schools.
The following Monday, Killian McLaughlin (6th Year) and Lucy Murphy (5th Year), visited Malahide Community School, representing Stratford College Student Council in their roles of Chairperson and Secretary. Seeing as MCS is a large new school with a student population of over a thousand, we thought it was the ideal school to compare with Stratford. After a tour of their large and impressive school, we sat in on one of their meetings, and immediately noticed the difference in numbers on the committee. Their meetings were held in a similar fashion to ours, although we noticed that the numbers of students being mentioned and the rooms and areas they were dealing with was on a much grander scale to that of Stratford College. After sitting in on the meeting we left with a few ideas for the running of our Student Council. We came to the conclusion, that MCS’s Student Council, although dealing with much bigger numbers and having more facilities at their disposal, are fundamentally not dissimilar to our own Student Council. Both schools maintain a strong anti-bullying policy and both schools strive to be student focused. All in all, the liaison with MCS was both beneficial and enjoyable for our Council and we look forward to implementing any ideas we had as a result of our visit. Green Schools have been busy in the last few weeks. We have launched our Jack and Jill Foundation recycling scheme which includes ink cartridges which go in the Red Box and phones in the Green Box. Both boxes are in the Hall. We would be grateful for your support in relation to the Ink cartridges and phone recycling - they are big boxes so please feel free to bring in old ink cartridges and phones.
I was invited to represent Green Schools by Killian Mc Loughlin (Chairperson of the Student Council) at a recent meeting between Malahide Student Council and our Student Council. Tadgh Charles, Green Schools Chairperson was on an Art Trip at the time. Amongst other issues, we discussed the introduction of a chewing gum fine, trying to preserve energy around the school and the Holocaust Crocus Plants Scheme that we are currently working on.
Finally thanks to the Conor Allen (TY), Fearghal Kelleher (TY) and Peadar Charles (TY) who took part in the 2011 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition with their project, The Urban Revolution. They were talking to the Minister of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government John Gormlely, who hopes to visit Stratford College in relation to Green Schools.

It's your say! The Stratford College Student Council's aim is to support, uphold and represent the student body.
The Student Council is an internal body dedicated to the preservation and promotion of student welfare. We act as a link between the students and staff, creating and open, warm and student-focused community. We aim to resolve any issues which arise and that effect the student body. If a pupil has a problem they are welcome to either inform their class representative or make a suggestion on our notice board. We then address the problem during one of our fortnightly meetings.

The Student council are hosting a fundraiser in aid of Irish charity ‘The Smile Project’ on Thursday, 23rd December, the last day of term. The show, which will run from 9:45-10:45am, will feature entertainment from the world street performance champion Jack Wise, among others. ‘The Smile Project’ is a relatively new charity established by Pat Power with the aim of providing aid to children in Nepal. The show costs €4 per student, all of which goes to this very worthy charity. We are looking forward to the day and hope everyone enjoys themselves.
