Old Library books being sent to India, Tanzania and Nigeria

February 6, 2012

Books for UCD VOBooks for UCDVOThroughout January Ms. O'Kelly has been withdrawing out-of-date books from the Library. These books are going to be sent to school libraries in India, Tanzania and Nigeria. Professor Mary Burke, from the UCD Volunteer Organisation (www.ucdvo.org) collected 8 boxes of books. Professor Burke told Ms. O'Kelly that "while the books might be out -of-date, they are still factually correct". The UCDVO has set up school libraries for primary schools in Tanzania and India.

Donald Odegbesan, President of AOSI Ireland, a charity that runs educational projects also took 8 boxes of books that his organisation will be shipping to Ogun State schools in the south-west of Nigeria. He was most grateful for the books. Books for Ogun State, NigeriaBooks for Ogun State, Nigeria

From a Green Schools perspective, this is an excellent way of recyclying old books and it is great to know that they will be appreciated by students in different parts of the world.  (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of image.)

Green Schools: apply for Green Flag

December 14, 2011

Green Schools, December 2011Green Schools, December 2011Recently Green Schools has started back with the new school year and is starting strong with help from the current 3rd years who are basing their C.S.P.E action project around getting the school new bins. More recently, the Green Schools committee submitted an application for a Green-Schools Flag. The deadline was Thursday, 1st December. We have to wait to hear if our application is successful or not.

The committee meetings are held in the English room during lunch time on Wednesdays. The meetings are open to all years from 1st to 6th. Our school's Green Code is "Encourage to clean, always think Green". We are trying to stress this, this year by starting with a new poster campaign to help remind our fellow students.

Thanks to the third years we have a weekly bin count. This is kept on the display board outside the hall so the students can be aware of the school's current recycling-to-black-bin ratio.

Green Schools co-ordinator is Ms. Donohoe and she speaks to the staff on our behalf when or if problems arise.

Green Schools, December 2011Green Schools has also decided to start the year off well by giving the 1st year students a cross-curricular project as part of their Art education. They will not only be learning but they will help raise awareness throughout the school. (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of image.)
