The BT Young Scientists
Myself and two other TY students, Conor Allen and Fearghal Kelleher took part in the BT Young Scientist &Technology Exhibition. The Exhibition ran from the 11th to the 15th January but was only open to the public on the 13th January. Our project, titled "The Urban Revolution" was about converting derelict sites of land into active fertile gardens, to encourage people to grow their own fruit and vegetables, and to show them the importance of it.
Our fondest memory of the BT Young Scientist had to be the Opening Ceremony on the Wednesday, 12th January. There was a live band, jugglers and a speech from President Mary McAleese. The judging took place over the following few days, and our least favourite memory would have to be waiting around for the judges at our stand because they were usually late. At the Awards Ceremony we agreed that we didn’t care if we didn’t win, getting in alone had been an achievement for us.
Over all it was an amazing experience because you meet so many people and get a chance to try and learn so many new and interesting things. I would recommend it to anyone in the years below me and even in my own year just to think of an idea and try enter next year because nothing compares. (Click on thumbnails to enlarge images)

On the 20th of January, the 6th Year Biology class went to Maynooth to carry out 6 different practicals that were relevant to the Leaving Certificate course. This included investigating the influence of light intensity or carbon dioxide on the rate of photosynthesis, along with 5 other experiments.
The trip in itself was both fun and enjoyable along with the educational side of it. I really enjoyed myself as the lecturers that were teaching us made doing the practicals fun, making it easy to learn everything as we were going along. Overall the day was really good and I would recommend next year’s 6th Years to go. (Click on a thumbnail to open an enlarged version of a photo.)

On Monday, 8th November during Science Week 1st, 2nd and 3rd Years went to the Eco-Unesco office also known as the Green House and were given a lecture on the importance of trees in our lives and also biodiversity. In this workshop we took part in different activities. I'd be right in saying that all students thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Green House and would recommend it to other students.

It was an interesting way of understanding one of the particularly difficult aspects of our course—DNA and cell division— by applying it to the real world. The lecturer was enthusiastic and extremely informative. Overall we found the day to be useful and many of us who were struggling with the topic before, now have a much better understanding of it.
