A number of the class explain what they thought of making the models:

Evan Matthews: "It was really fun to make the model. Mine was a sea with an island and a volcano."

Isabelle Byrne: "When I was making it I got a lot of paint and a lot of cardboard. To make it took two days. I enjoyed making it."

Daniel Eppel: "I really liked making the mountains because it took me about five minutes to make."

Jennifer Fehily: "I thought that making the mountains was really fun to make. I wish we always got homework to do with making things."

Niall Garvey: "Very interesting. I like how the models we made were 3D. I also like the designs on the models. It was a very interesting/fun project."

Oscar McHale: "To make the mountain we layered cardboard on top of each other and then painted them."

5th & 6th Year Geography Field Trip to Knockree

October 25, 2011

5th and 6th Year Geography River Study5th and 6th Year Geography students 2011-2012On Tuesday, 4th October, the 5th and 6th Year Geography classes, accompanied by Ms. Conlon and Ms. McGuckin, made their way to the Knockree Eco Centre to carry out our Leaving Certificate river study. This study is worth 20% of our Leaving Certificate, so it is important for us to participate and give full attention throughout the day.

It was a tiring, yet enjoyable day, spending our time standing and walking through a river. We were lucky to have good weather! Overall it was an experience for us all and the 5th Years got the benefit of getting the idea of what they will have to do next year for their Leaving Certificate. On the 4th October, the fifth and sixth year Geography classes went on a field trip to the Glencree River as part of the geographical investigation.  We went with the aim of proving the point of the river we were going to study was a river meander.  Overall, everyone enjoyed the trip and the change from the classroom.  Special thanks Jackie Kelleher who drove the fifth years there and back.

We were lucky it was only windy and not raining! (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of photo.)

2nd Year Geography students visit Marble Arch Caves in Co. Fermanagh

May 11, 2011

On Thursday, 14th April, 2nd Year students, Ms. Conlon and Ms. McGuckin visited  the Marble Arch Caves in Fermanagh. It took just  over two hours to get there. We took a guided tour through the cave and there were 200 steps down to it. We saw the stalagmites, stalactites and the pillars, all formed due to chemical weathering. There was a river running through the cave.  Our tour guide was very helpful and answered all of our questions. After the tour of the cave we had some lunch in the café and then we got back onto the bus and went on a guided nature/geographical walk. We saw lots of limestone and sandstone. There was lots of cattle around but they didn’t bother us. The weather was lovely and it was a really warm day. We all really enjoyed the trip.

Charity gig in aid of the Japanese Earthquake organised by 2nd Year student

April 11, 2011

Pray for JapaneseOn Saturday, 26th March, I put up an under 18's gig at Bewleys Café Theatre on Grafton Street.  There were four acts playing, including a few from Stratford College. The bands were: What? The Band made of Salt, Mr. Grieves, Frank and Alex Lai on piano.

A lot of organisation and hard work was put in by everyone involved and in the end it turned out to be a very successful night. Special thanks to the bands and Mr. Russell for his brilliant advice and support. The profits were given to charity in aid of the Japanese Earthquake.
