Well done to all 2nd and 3rd Years Classical Studies Students. Students participated in a Classical Art competition. They were asked to chose a creature or character from Classical Studies and create a model using toilet roll.
I was so impressed with the high standard of art work and the range of Classical characters chosen. It was very difficult to decide on a winner. Ms. O' Reilly and Ms. Mahon acted as judges and together we reached the difficult decision.
Congratulations to first place winner Ciara (3rd Year) and Sadhbh (3rd Year), Sveltlana and Andrew (2nd Year) who all came in second place. You will see the winning models below. Please visit the Classical Studies room to view all the other models, including a Cyclops, Minotaur, Spartan warrior, Roman soldier, Hydra, 3 Fates, Dido, Helen of Sparta, Parthenon and many more.
Well done to all of you who participated and thanks to Ms. O' Reilly and Ms. Mahon for judging. (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of image.)
Ms. Donohoe
I decided to do Triton the son of Neptune (G-d of the Sea) because we had just had a recent discussion about him. His bod
y was made out of toilet roll. For his head I got some newspaper and rolled it into a ball. I covered the newspaper with a hanky. To make the hair I used a needle and thread and threaded the wool on.
Ever since 1st Year Classics, I've loved the myth about Persephone being abducted by Hades and forced to marry him in the underworld. When we were asked to make a model of any classical creature I immediately thought of Persephone. I based my idea on a corpse bride. The body is made of toilet roll and her head is made from clay. The material for the dress and veil was from the Art room.
I choose to do Athena because she is one of my favourite g-ddesses. I used a picture of her and stuck it to the toilet roll that we needed to use. I decided to leave it in black and white. To make her robe, I used some old tights and decorated it with some jewellery. I made her staff with a paintbrush and her shield with a sea shell. I decorated both with silver and gold marker. I put a picture of the Medusa on it instead of the owl that is usually shown on Athena's shield.
I chose to make a harpie because I thought it would be fun to make the wings and the feathers. I used two toilet rolls, a few pages of newspaper, and a sheet of Ms. Mahon's crepe paper. I cut a toilet roll in half for the wings and cut out little triangles from a newspaper for the feathers. I covered the harpie in orange crepe paper and used orange pipe cleaners for the arms and legs. For the claws and face, I used tin foil, which is really hard to stick on...I really enjoyed makingmy harpie!

Recently Green Schools has started back with the new school year and is starting strong with help from the current 3rd years who are basing their C.S.P.E action project around getting the school new bins. More recently, the Green Schools committee submitted an application for a Green-Schools Flag. The deadline was Thursday, 1st December. We have to wait to hear if our application is successful or not.
The committee meetings are held in the English room during lunch time on Wednesdays. The meetings are open to all years from 1st to 6th. Our school's Green Code is "Encourage to clean, always think Green". We are trying to stress this, this year by starting with a new poster campaign to help remind our fellow students.
Thanks to the third years we have a weekly bin count. This is kept on the display board outside the hall so the students can be aware of the school's current recycling-to-black-bin ratio.
Green Schools co-ordinator is Ms. Donohoe and she speaks to the staff on our behalf when or if problems arise.
Green Schools has also decided to start the year off well by giving the 1st year students a cross-curricular project as part of their Art education. They will not only be learning but they will help raise awareness throughout the school. (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of image.)

During the Awards Ceremony on Friday, 28th October, the 3rd Year CSPE class hosted a raffle. We had a wide range of prizes, ranging from the top prize (an Avoca hamper) to eatery and cinema vouchers, bus passes, bottles of Fanta and more. It was a great success as every raffle ticket was sold.
We had the fundraiser to raise money to purchase user-friendly bins for the hall of our school. This, we hope, will encourage students to be more aware of which bin to dispose their rubbish in, and, therefore lower the number of black bags the school produces each week. This is our aim for our Junior Certificate CSPE project.
We raised a total of €723 from the raffle.
